Testing is finally done, woohoo!!! Graded papers came home today – please sign and return them tomorrow. Although this is a short week, we still have a lot going on! Hopefully we will be back in the normal swing of things SOON!!

Spelling – time, could, no, make – vowel teams on spelling test – spelling test Friday

Phonics – we will continue our unit on vowel teams! ee, ea, ai, ay, ie, oa, ou  – we have been using the strategy that “when two vowels go walking, the first one does the talking”. The vowel team works together and you only hear the FIRST vowel in the team. Click here for a great resource to help your kiddo remember the rule!

Math – we will continue our unit on missing addends and balancing equations – balancing equations assessment Friday – I will send homework tomorrow for review!

Science – habitats! We will be doing a unit on deserts, oceans, and the arctic!

Week of January 7th

Hi everyone!!! I hope you each had a wonderful Christmas break and enjoyed spending time with your family and friends during the holidays! I have missed your littles so much and I cannot wait to hear about the fun things they have done the past two weeks!

IMPORTANT JANUARY DATES

MONDAY, JANUARY 20TH — MLK SCHOOL HOLIDAY

WEDNESDAY, JANUARY 29TH — HALF DAY (PLC)

Champ assemblies will begin this week! They will be every Friday morning at 8:00!

Parents are welcome to come to each assembly, however it is not required.

Assemblies typically last 20-30 min.

I will let you know ahead of time the date that our class will be on stage! 

The second semester of 1st grade is more challenging because our expectations are higher for our kiddos. We are going to dive right back in this week!! REPORT CARDS WILL COME HOME THURSDAY!

Spelling – into, has, her, more – ABC order on spelling test – Spelling test Friday

Phonics – long and short vowels – We have worked on this already so it should be a refresher for your kiddos. This week we will be applying what we have learned more in depth. At home you can work on this with your kiddos by pointing at things around the house. When you say the word, does the vowel say its name (long) or does the vowel say its sound (short)?

Reading – book bags will begin coming home again! We will be focusing on fluency and how to use context clues to quickly figure out words and/or phrases.

Writing – this will be a refresh week! During interactive writing students will fill in parts of words/sentences that are missing. This will encourage them to apply and look for the parts of words/sentences that they know should be included such as punctuation, capitalization, finger spaces, missing words, missing vowels, etc.

Math – missing addends – We will introduce this by playing games such as bears in the cave. For example: I will show students 8 bears, then I will cover some of them (the bears go in the cave), now they see 3 bears, how many are in the cave? 8 – ___ = 3 is the SAME thing as 3 + ___ = 8. The blank in the middle is the missing addend that they will be solving for. Assessment Friday

Social Studies – New Years Resolutions – we will define the word resolution and discuss what it means. Then we will make resolutions for our classroom and for ourselves.

Week of December 16th

We are in the home stretch of Christmas break — woohoo!!! I am so excited for the fun things we have planned for this week!!!

IMPORTANT REMINDERS

  • Polar Express Day on Tuesday means PAJAMA DAY! 😀
  • 20 “small somethings” due Wednesday!
  • Christmas party on Friday from 9-10 — doors will open at 8:30!
    • If you will be attending the party, please plan on checking your child out and taking him/her with you! The entire district will be releasing at 12:15 on this day so it will be crazy!
  • Early release Friday @ 12:15 — buses will run as normal!
  • Students return from Christmas holiday on Tuesday, January 7th

The only assessment we will have this week will be over subtraction. I will be sending their graded papers home this week — please sign and return 🙂

Your child will not be coming home with his/her book bag this week! But please encourage reading during the break!

Week of December 9th

IMPORTANT INFORMATION 

  • Food drive this week benefitting White Oak Community Church food pantry and the backpack program!
  • 20 “small somethings” due by Wednesday, December 18th
  • Christmas party Friday, December 20th at 9
  • Early release Friday, December 20th at 12:15

Spelling – some, them, would, other – spelling test Friday!

Phonics – vce words – this will carry over from last week! We learned about this by using the “magic E” that makes the vowel in the middle of the word say its name instead of its sound. You can practice this at home with words like tap –> tape, bit –> bite, etc.

Reading/Writing – continuing nonfiction texts and text features

Math – common assessment Monday, benchmark Thursday! We will use this week to review addition/subtraction, place value, comparing/ordering numbers, and problem solving strategies.

Social Studies – wants vs. needs – this will be a great time to discuss with students the difference in things that we want and things that we need in relation to Christmas lists and the spirit of giving 🙂

Week of November 18th

+++ This week we will be having a fundraiser to help raise money for two amazing women in our community that have become sick.  I sent home a letter last week about it. We will be collecting donations (coins, dollars, anything will help with their medical bills) To make this even more fun for our kiddos each day we will have a dress up day!

Dress up days:

Monday: Wear your favorite team jersey/shirt (or your teams favorite colors)

Tuesday: Wear PJS

Wednesday: Hat day

Thursday: Bring favorite stuffed animal to school

Friday: Roughneck spirt colors

ON FRIDAY: We will be having our Readers’ Theater Performance in our classroom.  Please try to make it.  The kiddos have been working so hard on this.  It will be at 9:30 in our classroom and will last about 20 minutes! You are free to take your kiddo home with you afterwards to begin your Thanksgiving break!! 🙂

This week:

Spelling words: about, how, up, out (Spelling test will be on Thursday due to program on Friday) 

Spelling Pattern/Phonics: Review Digraphs: sh, th, wh, ch and adding digraph ph  (ph is like wh, the kiddos will have a hard time coming up those words on their own, so to practice just point out words that have that pattern in them.)

Math: Doubles and Doubles plus one.  To practice at home: I would make flash cards with the doubles facts on it to flash with the kiddos.  I am wanting these facts to be automatic for our kiddos.  If they can memorize these facts it will help them so much with our other harder math that will be coming up! Once they memorize the doubles then flash the double and ask what is one more than that.  Ex: 3+3 what is one more than this double?, the answer is 7.

Doubles are: 0+0, 1+1, 2+2, 3+3, 4+4, 5+5, 6+6, 7+7, 8+8, 9+9, 10+10

Science/Social Studies: Thanksgiving

Week of November 4th

Hi everyone! Wow I cannot believe it is already November!!! Your sweeties are learning and growing so quickly! We will be in our normal routine this week, thank goodness! So be looking for your child’s book bag each night and remember to have them answer their reading response in their journals.

Spelling: your, which, their, said — Spelling Test Friday!

Phonics: We will continue to work with s-blends — sm-, sk-, scr-, str- Assessment Thursday!

Writing: We will begin a whole class story based off of the book Turkey Trouble. As we discussed during parent conferences, we will really dive in to revising and editing this 9 weeks! We will practice this week whole group and during writer’s workshop.

Math: We will continue to work on place value — this week we will focus on using a 4-chart. Students have to write the number in standard form (24), expand the number (20 + 4) , draw the number (with tens and ones blocks), and write the number in written form (twenty four). Please practice this with your kiddo at home! If they have questions, make a note in their planner so I can make sure to address it during guided math. Place value assessment Friday!

Social Studies: We will do a unit and past and present by learning about Thanksgiving, pilgrims, the Mayflower, etc.

These next 3 weeks leading up to Thanksgiving break will be fast and furious! If you have any questions or concerns, please do not hesitate to contact me!

RED RIBBON WEEK!

Week of October 22nd

Hey everyone! We have finished the 1st nine weeks of school, WOOH! It is AWESOME to see how much your children have already grown and learned in such a short period of time! Report cards will be coming home with your child on Thursday. 🙂

As a reminder, if you have not signed up for a time for student led conferences yet please do so. Next week will be a very busy week with Red Ribbon Week (dress-up days information note coming home tomorrow), student led conferences, Halloween, and a half day! As for this week…

Phonics – we will begin focusing on consonant blends! This week’s focus will be on s-blends (sp, sn, st, sl).

Spelling – we, there, can, an / spelling test Friday!

Reading – we will be reading stories about bats and doing a nonfiction study unit to focus on facts vs. details. We will also continue to discuss beginning, middle, and end.

Science – we will dive deeper into discussion and research over bats! The books we read during interactive read-aloud will carry over into or science time for students to make connections.

Writing – we will focus on how to write a nonfiction story by learning about spiders! We will introduce how to write can, have, are sentences (i.e. spiders can, spiders have, spiders are). Facts vs. details will also be discussed during this time.

Math – we will begin learning about place value! This will be a fun unit for students to better be able to manipulate and understand numbers greater than 10. Math homework Thursday! Place value assessment Friday!

Week of October 14th

Hi everyone! I hope you all enjoyed your weekend in this nice, cool weather!! Now let’s just hope it stays that way! 🙂

I have important information for you for the rest of the busy month of October!

IMPORTANT DATES

Tuesday, October 15th – Fire Station visit (please make sure your child is wearing socks!)

No parents needed for this short trip to our local fire department!

Monday, October 21st – STUDENT HOLIDAY! Enjoy this day off with your kiddos 🙂

October 28th-November 1st – Red Ribbon Week! I will get the themes for each day to you later this week

Tuesday, October 29th – Student-led conferences – I will send you a link to sign up for a conference time ASAP

Wednesday, October 30th – EARLY RELEASE DAY! Students will be released at 11:30

This week

Reading – Kevin Henkes author study

Phonics – ABC order — we will do this by putting our names, word wall words, candy wrappers, books, etc. in ABC order

Spelling – what, all, were, when — spelling test Friday!

Writing – Continue to focus on characters, how their feelings change, and the beginning, middle, and end of a story

Math – Lots of review! Please continue to go over addition and subtraction with your kiddo at home! When doing homework or extra practice, have your child circle the sign in the number sentence so that they will focus on what operation they need to perform (+ or -). We are really working on SLOWING DOWN so that we don’t make careless errors during math such as miscounting, adding when we are supposed to subtract/subtracting when we are supposed to add, writing numbers backward, etc. We will also review strategies, measurement, and graphing! Math benchmark Friday!

Science – Fun unit on force with a focus on magnets!

We could use some more snacks for our snack cabinet! Ask your kiddos what they would like to have for snack 🙂 A few I know they love are cheese balls, goldfish, graham crackers, pretzels, fruit snacks, Go-Gurt, and string cheese. Right now our cabinet is full of pretzels, animal crackers, and goldfish! 😀
