Week of December 3rd and Other Information

Our Christmas party will be on Thursday, December 20th at 9:00. I will be going through the volunteer forms you filled out at the beginning of the year tomorrow and Wednesday. Since SignUpGenius has worked so well this year, I will be creating a sign up sheet for items we will need for our party. I will also be contacting parents to help run stations the day of the party! I would also like to do a puzzle exchange this year for them to give to one another. We will make a game out of this, so please purchase a puzzle that a boy or girl would love to put together and send it to school with your kiddo already wrapped.  Please do not spend more than $5!! (I know the dollar store has some cute ones)

**Students will be bringing home self choice books this week as we are completing midyear benchmarks during guided reading time. If the book is too difficult, help them read it, and encourage them to use their reading strategies and look for chunks that they know in difficult words.

Spelling words: which, their, said, if, do, will, we, there, can, an, your  —  Please have fun while practicing these words at home.  ‘there’ and ‘their’ are tricky for them.  I will make a poster with them and I draw a person out of the “i” in ‘their’ to make the connection with possession, or belonging to a person. We link ‘there’ to a place such as “Where? Over there”.

Phonics: We are working on r controlled vowels — ar, or, er, ir, ur. You can help with this during reading time at home. Each time they notice a word with an r controlled vowel have them clap, snap, or point to it. This encourages them not only to listen for the sound, but to recognize what it looks like.

Math: We will continue to build up our addition and subtraction strategies and begin to use bigger numbers. You could help us out at home by just asking things like “What is 10 + 1, What is 9-1, If I have 7 and need 11, How many more do I need?”  Learning how to tie math into all aspects of life is so good for them, so any time you have a chance to ask them to count something for you, figure out how many days until ______, or what’s missing kinds of things are awesome!  We are learning how to do a survey, collect data, and create different types of graphs (name graph, pictograph, tally graph, bar graph) using this information.

Writing:  We will begin another class story to make into a book.  This usually takes about 2 1/2 weeks.  In Writers Workshop they will continue writing stories about anything they’d like. They are all at different stages of writing which is what makes this time so fun.  We are really focusing on what details we need in a story to make it a great story, and once they complete a story they get to share it with our class.

Science/Social Studies:  We will be conducting several science experiments over the next few weeks to keep their attentions!!!  We are also learning about wants vs needs.  I think this is the best time of year to talk about this very important, but hard to learn lesson.

If I can ever answer any questions you have or help you out with anything please let me know.  I am having so much fun getting to know your sweeties and watching them grow!
